Hotstuff
DeFi layer 1 to trade, earn and bank
I’ve been looking into Hotstuff the past few days and it’s one of the more interesting trading setups I’ve seen recently.
At its core, it’s a DeFi-native Layer 1 built specifically for high-performance on-chain trading. You get perpetuals across crypto, tokenized US stocks and ETFs, FX, indices, and commodities - all inside one unified margin account. The biggest practical difference is that markets run 24/7, 365 days a year. No waiting for traditional market hours.
What stands out for me is how they handle real-world usability. Most DeFi perp platforms still feel clunky when it comes to moving money in and out. Hotstuff has proper fiat rails (ACH, SEPA, PIX, etc.) across a lot of countries, plus easy stablecoin-to-fiat swaps. That alone removes a big friction point if you actually want to trade seriously instead of just farming points.
They’re also pushing tokenized equities hard. Being able to trade things like Netflix, Google, or S&P 500 exposure on-chain and around the clock is genuinely useful for people who don’t live in the US or don’t want to deal with traditional brokers. It’s not just another crypto perp DEX.
A few other angles worth thinking about
Performance & infrastructure
Because it’s its own L1 (using DracoBFT), latency is low and the order book feels snappier than most things running on general-purpose chains. For traders who care about execution, this matters more than people admit. The unified margin system across asset classes also reduces the usual headache of managing multiple positions and collateral.
User acquisition & growth
They launched mainnet in February 2026 and already crossed $1B in cumulative volume within the first 90 days. That’s decent traction for a new chain. The points system, competitions, and referral program are clearly designed to bootstrap liquidity and usage. It feels like they’re playing the long game - building actual trading volume rather than just short-term hype.
Risks & reality check
It’s still relatively new. Smart contract risk, L1 security, and liquidity depth during big moves are things you have to watch. It’s also invite-only right now, which keeps things controlled but limits how fast it can grow. And while the tokenized stock feature is cool, you’re still dealing with counterparty risk on the underlying assets being tokenized.
How it compares to similar projects
vs Hyperliquid
Hyperliquid is probably the closest comparison right now. Both are purpose-built L1s for perps with excellent performance. Hyperliquid has more mature volume and a bigger ecosystem at the moment. Hotstuff’s edge seems to be the broader asset coverage (especially tokenized equities) and stronger fiat on/off ramps. If you mainly trade crypto perps, Hyperliquid might still feel more liquid. If you want stocks + crypto in one account with 24/7 access, Hotstuff pulls ahead.
vs dYdX
dYdX moved to its own chain earlier and focused heavily on perps. It’s more established, but the UX and asset variety feel narrower compared to what Hotstuff is trying to do. Hotstuff feels like it’s aiming for a “one-stop financial OS” vibe rather than just being a perp DEX.
vs centralized exchanges (Binance, Bybit, etc.)
The obvious advantages are on-chain transparency, self-custody options, and true 24/7 markets without any closing bells. The downsides are usually lower liquidity on newer pairs and the general DeFi learning curve. Hotstuff is trying to close that gap with better fiat support and a cleaner all-in-one account.
Overall, I see Hotstuff as trying to sit somewhere between a high-performance perp DEX and a more complete trading + banking experience. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone, but the combination of 24/7 tokenized markets + decent fiat rails makes it stand out from most pure crypto platforms.
If you’re looking for a new place to trade perps with some real-world asset exposure and don’t mind being early, it’s worth checking out.
